TOPEKA — After sweeping Garden City at Rathert Stadium in Junction City April 4, the Junction City High School baseball team (6-0) traveled to Topeka Wednesday to play a doubleheader against Hayden High School (4-4).

Junction City swept the doubleheader, winning the first game by a score of 9-2, and the second game by a score of 7-4.

In the top of the first inning of the first game, senior Dre Addison led off with a strikeout. Sophomore Jojo Nieves hit a single. Junior Thane McDaniel drew a walk. Senior Easton Rindt hit a single to load the bases, but Junction City suffered two straight outs to end the frame.

McDaniel got the start on the mound for Junction City in the bottom of the first. McDaniel induced a groundout before striking out two straight batters to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the second, senior Nick Sharp drew a walk. Senior Ty Clark recorded a single. Addison drew a walk to load the bases. Nieves singled to score Sharp. McDaniel singled to score Clark.

Rindt hit a triple to score two more runs for Junction City. Junior Baylor Wilkey hit a single to score another run. Freshman Russell Wilkey drew a walk before Senior Ashton Wiegand hit a triple to score two runs. 

Junction City held a 7-0 lead over Hayden after the top of the second inning.

McDaniel allowed a double to start the bottom of the second inning. McDaniel struck out his next two batters. Hayden reached on an error that scored its first run of the game. 

After two innings, Junction City held a 7-1 lead over Hayden.

Junction City suffered three straight outs to start the third inning.

McDaniel induced a line out before striking out his next two batters to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Rindt hit a single. Baylor Wilkey drew a walk before the frame ended.

McDaniel walked one batter with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but recorded two straight strikeouts to end the inning.

Junction City suffered three straight outs to start the fifth inning.

McDaniel only allowed one hit in the bottom of the fifth, but induced three outs to end the inning.

Addison opened the sixth inning with a single. Nieves drew a walk. McDaniel drew a walk. Rindt lined into a double play with one out to end the inning.

McDaniel allowed a single to start the bottom of the sixth. Hayden grounded into a double play. McDaniel allowed a double and a single to give Hayden another run to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

Baylor Wilkey hit a single to open the seventh inning. Russell Wilkey drew a walk. Wiegand drew a walk to load the bases. Sharp drew a walk to bring home another run for Junction City. Clark hit a sacrifice fly to score Russell Wilkey. Junction City suffered two straight outs to end the frame.

McDaniel induced three straight outs to end the game, as Junction City won 9-2.

In seven innings of work, McDaniel recorded eight strikeouts while allowing seven hits and two runs.

Junction City recorded 11 hits.

Rindt led Junction City with three hits and knocked in two runs. Nieves recorded two hits and one RBI. Baylor Wilkey recorded two hits and one RBI. Addison recorded one hit. McDaniel recorded one hit and one RBI. Wiegand recorded one hit and two RBIs. Sharp recorded one RBI. Clark finished with one hit and one RBI.

In the top of the first inning in the second game, Addison led Junction City off with a strikeout. Nieves hit a single. McDaniel hit a single. Rindt hit a double to score two runs. Baylor Wilkey struck out and Russell Wilkey grounded out to end the frame.

Wiegand got the start for Junction City in the second game. Wiegand induced a pop out before striking out a Hayden batter for the second out. Wiegand induced a lineout to end the inning.

Junction City led by a score of 2-0 after one inning.

Wiegand hit a double to start the second inning. However, Junction City suffered three straight outs to end the frame.

Senior Max Bazan stepped in for Wiegand on the mound in the bottom of the second. Bazan walked his first batter before inducing three straight outs to end the inning.

Junction City couldn't get anything going in the top of the third, as three of its four plate appearances resulted in outs.

Wiegand stepped back in for Bazan in the bottom of the third. Wiegand induced two straight outs before striking out a batter to end the inning.

Russell Wilkey drew a walk to open the fourth inning. Russell Wilkey stole second. Wiegand brought home Russell Wilkey on a single to score another run for Junction City. Junction City suffered three straight outs to end the frame.

Hayden opened the bottom of the fourth with a double. Wiegand induced two straight outs. With a runner on third, Hayden scored on an RBI single before scoring another run with an RBI double. 

Junction City held a 3-2 lead after four innings.

Nieves got hit by a pitch to start the fifth inning. McDaniel knocked in Nieves on an RBI double. 

Wiegand induced three straight outs to end the fifth inning.

Russell Wilkey opened the sixth inning with a single. With one out, Sharp hit a single. Junction City hit into two straight outs to end the frame.

Hayden opened the bottom of the sixth with a single. Hayden hit into a double play before ending the inning with a pop out.

Nieves drew a walk to start the seventh inning. McDaniel singled on a bunt. Rindt knocked in Nieves with a double. Baylor Wilkey knocked in McDaniel with a sacrifice fly. Senior Devin Newman, who stepped in for Rindt as a courtesy runner, stole home on an error by Hayden's catcher. 

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hayden hit two straight singles. Wiegand loaded the bases after hitting a batter with a pitch. Hayden scored with an RBI single. Junction City converted a double play opportunity to end the game.

Junction City won by a score of 7-4. 

In six innings of work, Wiegand allowed eight hits and four runs while recording two strikeouts. Bazan walked one batter in one inning of work.

Junction City recorded 10 hits. 

McDaniel led Junction City with three hits, while recording one RBI. Rindt recorded two hits and three RBIs. Wiegand finished with two hits and one RBI. Nieves, Russell Wilkey, and Sharp recorded one hit apiece.

Junction City will be back in action Friday, when it hosts Topeka High School for a doubleheader at Rathert Stadium.
